Science writer Christian Jarrett has brought his attention to bear on a new study purporting to show that men's and women's brains are wired differently—and that this helps to explain different behavioural patterns between the sexes. Alas, while "the world's media lapped this up," (here's just one example among many) Jarrett points out that there are some serious problems with both the press coverage and the study.
Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has never met a price control he didn't like. The latest news is that he will regulate the price of new and used cars in order to fight inflation, which hit 54% in October. This is a lot like using leeches to balance the four humours: It's discredited nonsense that does more harm than good (and shame on Bloomberg.com for its uncritical report on the matter, though I'm sure many other news outlets are just as bad). Everybody relax: Joe Biden is on the case. The US Vice President is headed to Asia this week to try to diffuse mounting tensions over the Chinese government’s newly declared air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea. The area overlaps with the Japanese government’s ADIZ and covers a disputed chain of uninhabited islands known as Daioyu in China and Senkaku in Japan. There’s something very satisfying about travelling, no matter how you do it. Airplanes are exciting, trains are romantic, and buses... well, buses will get you from point A to point B. But driving is the best. I recently had the pleasure of doing some highway driving with no heavy traffic slowing me down. I was able to just enjoy the feeling of the steering wheel in my hands, the sense of controlling my own fate, the road speeding by, the changing landscape. |
